One of our newest endeavors in 2018 is pigeons! Pigeons are friendly, happy little birds are full of personality, and make lots of cheerful noises. There are many breeds and colors of pigeons, all bred for different things, like racing, homing, meat, and show. Young pigeons, called squabs, from meat breeds can be eaten.
They need a special house, called a "loft". They require roosts in their loft, and plenty of room to fly around. Each pigeon requires their own nest box, male or female. This is because pigeons mate for life, and they will both sit on a nest and care for the squabs. Soon after the squabs are born, the female will start on another clutch of eggs, and will continue to raise the born squabs in the first box, and the eggs in the second until the second clutch is hatched and the first squabs are remotely independent. |
